Moscow trip FIRST DAY Part TWO

the SECOND part is here now!!

After our windows shopping, we proceeded to the RED SQUARE.

The place in the black ring is the RED SQUARE. It was just near to the underground shopping complex (no. 42).
** Addition, no. 16, 17, 18, 19, 20-27, 29-35 are towers. Each tower has their own name! **

This photo was took just outside the shopping complex. the birds were very cute, they all look up to where? To the group of children which were busy eating their Mcdonald after their visits at the Kremlin. hahaha..THe birds were waiting for them to drop some food crunches from their burgers.

Red square was formed in 1493 when after one more conflagration prince Ivan III ordered to remove wooden buildings that were approching Kremlin wall, from the 250m wide area. It was forbidden to settle there since then but it was allowed to trade there and the initial name of the square was Torgovaya (Trading).

In 1918, victims of the revolutionary events in Russia were buried at the Kremlin wall and in 1924 a coffin with Lenin's body was displayed in a temporary mausoleum. Since then the Red square served also as a necropolis for statesmen and members of the party, military leaders and astronauts.

Red Square consists of State historical museum (no. 39), Gum Deparment Store (no. 43), Saint Basil's Cathedral (no. 40), Lobnoye mesto (Place of execution)and Lenin Mausoleum (no. 32)

Ta da!! This is one of the building in the Red Square. The State HIstorical Museum (no. 39). this is the front view of it. This view can be seen just when u came out from the shopping complex. This state historical museum is the largest national historical museum of the country, that was founded in 1872. Collection of the museum represents the history and culture of Russia from the ancient times till our days and is unique in terms of amount and value of museum exhibit. But we didnt go inside the museum cause the outside buildings are more attractive. hahaha...

On my way to enter the red square, i turned to the back and took the picture of the shopping complex. Johnny was taking Adeline's photo there. hehehe..

We were now in the center of the Red Square. Behind us is the State historical museum (the back view)

This is the Gum deparment Store. No. 43 in the map.

In front of it, there's a skating ring. What a nice ring it is. with nice background musics too.

The right side is the state historical museum, the left side is the Lenin's Mausoleum, we all came from the pathway between this 2 buildings. See, there was many people visiting this Red Square. Was snowing quite heavily.

The Lenin's Mausoleum where the Lenin's body was displayed. It is a stone Mausoleum which was constructed in 1930. It is one of the most ambiguous monuments of the Soviet past of Russia. Recently the question of Lenin's burial is raised more and more often, however, the mausoleum is still open (from 10 am till 1 pm except Monday, Friday, and Sunday)

The clock tower, called Spaskaya tower (no. 31 in the map)

Saint Basil's Cathedral, no.40 in the map, is one of the most vivid and famous monuments of the old Russian architecture. Its silhoutte is the visual symbol of Moscow and Russia. The cathedral was laid in 1552 in honour of the conquest of Kazan and Astrakhan kingdoms by Ivan the Terrible. At first the name of the cathedral was of the cathedral of the Virgin Protection. Later in one of the side-altars God's fool Vasily Blazhenny was burrid, and the cathedral acquired its present name. According to the chronicles, the authors of the cathedrals were architects Postnik and Barma. The legend says that Ivan the Terrible who admired the beauty of the cathedral ordered to blind the architects so they could never construct such a masterpiece again. St. Basil's cathedral represents the symmetric ensemble of 8 churches, which surround the ninth church that is the tallest. The churches are crowned with domes, each of which is decorated with cornices, kokoshniks, windows and bays. The walls of the cathedral are decorated with oil paintings and frescos of the 16th - 19th centuries, there are about 400 icons in the cathedral, which represent the best examples of the Novgorod and Moscow icon-painting schools. Since 1923, there's a museum in the cathedral, however, church service is held there rarely.

Our group photos. Besides us is the Monument to Minin and Pozharsky. This bronze statue by sculptor Ivan Martos that stands in front of the Saint Basil's Cathedral commemorates Kuzma Minin and prince Dmitry Pozharsky, who gathered the all RUssian volunteer army in the time of Polish intervention and who contributed to the victory of Russia over Poland in 1612.
