This half week, from Thursday till Saturday and next whole week is Traumatology cycle…this time, we have to take around 30 minutes bus to traumato hospital where we had our class there…johnny took a few pictures of the hospital, not sure when he going to upload it..haha..so just go to his blog and hunt for the pics~

First day of Traumato, studied about the introduction of traumatology and the history of it….Traumatology (trauma=injury) study about mechanical injuries of musculoskeletal system and their diagnostics and treatment..mechanical injuries such as fracture, crush, dislocation, subluxation, sprain, bruise, rupture and etc..
Basically, study bout injury of bones and muscles….
Hospital consists of 4 floors….according to our teacher, there will be around 10-15 operations per day…and there’s many patients in this hospital…most of them are bone fractures….such as tibial, femoral, wrist, ankle fractures…

So, first day, history and introduction of orthopedics and traumatology. Let me introduce some of the heroes in orthopedics……

Nikolay Ivanovich Pirogov, 1810-1881, was a prominent Russian scientist, doctor, pedagogue, public figure, and corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1847). He is considered to be the founder of field surgery, and was one of the first surgeons in Europe to use ether as an anaesthetic. He was the first surgeon to use anaesthesia in a field operation (1847), invented various kinds of surgical operations, and developed his own technique of using plaster casts to treat fractured bones. He was the first in the world to make pericardiocentesis, to describe the indications and procedure of the operation. His name is one of the most widely recognised in Russian medical history, and he is considered a Russian national hero. He entered Moscow Univ. at the age of 14 and completed the medical curriculum at 17. He then studied in Germany, receiving a doctor of philosophy degree at Dorpat, where he served as professor of surgery at age 25 only, from 1836 to 1840. He first gained prominence in the United States for his anatomical studies on arteries and fascia. In 1840 he returned to Russia and became professor of hospital surgery at the Military Medical Academy at St. Petersburg. The opening of the Crimean War in 1854 found him in Sevastopol. Considered the founder of field surgery, he devised the plaster cast, first used successfully in the Sevastopol campaign, and the Pirogov amputation, a method of severing the foot so that part of the heel bone is left in the stump to give added support to the lower ends of the leg bones. He was one of the first to use ether as an anesthetic (1847) and was the author of many scientific treatises.

Gavriil A. Ilizarov (1921 – 1992) introduced Exrafocal compression-distraction devices of external fixing. This devices are named after him, ilizarov apparatus. The picture is the apparatus.

Professor Viktor V. Trocenko introduced arthroplasty, grafting of cartilaginous tissue, osteotomy, diagnostics and treatment of degenerative arthrosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The orthopedics and traumatology department of this hospital was organized on base of the municipal hospital № 4 in 1970. This man called Georgy P. Barsucov was the first professor of the department.

Friday, we had test for the previous topic then teacher brought us to see the patients. There’s so many patient with almost all of them are because of legs fracture. And of course almost of them are set up with the ilizarov apparatus. This apparatus are heavy and it passes through the bone. We all can feel the pain of theirs eventhough it’s not on us. So, becareful, don’t let your bones fractured.

This is how it looks like....
